A Few Pet Peeves

#1 Mean people. I can’t figure out why you’d purposely try to hurt someone or make them feel small. It shows a lack of general empathy, which in turn shows a lack of social maturity. And I really don’t like it when people are rude to strangers. That was actually one of my criteria when I was dating in college---I had to know the guy was nice to people he didn’t know. I figured if he couldn’t keep his cool with a stranger, he probably couldn’t keep it with me.

#2 How my children seem to purposely wait until I sit down and relax to ask me for just one. Last. Thing.

#3 Designer things that seem to have no especial value other than brand name. If I can get the same quality off-brand for less money, you can bet your left nostril I’ll buy off-brand every time. Buying something just for the “name” irritates me to no end.

#4 Moms who belittle other mothers’ parenting skills. Can’t we all just be supportive of each other? Not all families have the same dynamic, and different things work for different people. (See #1) Ooo, and you know what’s even WORSE? People with NO CHILDREN who belittle other people’s parenting skills. I used to be one of those annoying people. Before I had kids, I couldn’t BELIEVE parents ACTUALLY let their children watch brain-cell-destroying television. BWAHAHAHAHA! (wiping away tear).

#5 Finishing the laundry in its entirety (washing, folding, putting away) only to discover you forgot to put in the pair of jeans you wanted to wear tomorrow. ARGGGGHHH! It makes me angry just thinking about it!

In other news, We started painting our family room today. It took us the entire day just to caulk, putty, tape and put up primer. Letting the kids "help" definitely seemed to double the work load. I spent a good chunk of time scrubbing primer out of the carpet. But hey, they (and we) had fun. It's already starting to look better! I'm so excited I feel dizzy. Or it may just be the many wafting paint fumes...

Some of the Things I Crave Are...

-Homemade Vanilla Bluebell Ice cream with chocolate syrup, mixed together until it’s mushy. When I lived in Utah and Chicago I deeply mourned the loss of bluebell ice cream, which is clearly and without contest the most excellent ice cream known to man.

-Reading a book in a cold house under a warm blanket when it’s absolutely quiet. I dream about that cozy, indulgent feeling I get as I drift off to sleep. I think I crave this so much because it’s such a rarity (at least the quiet part).

-Making music in small groups. My dream evening would be a bunch of people sitting around my living room singing in harmony as Steven or me or whoever strummed along on guitar or mandolin or any other acoustic instrument. Creating living, breathing music in your own house is an amazing experience that I literally sometimes YEARN for. It's so intimate and personal. It makes you feel bound to the people you create it with.

-My own baked potato soup. It’s loaded with cream and butter and cheese and all kinds of good stuff. It’s outrageously unhealthy and will very likely cause my death some day. But oh, what a way to go…

Meaning of "Grundy Love"

Grundy. In the midwest, it's the term for a monster wedgie. It was also my husband's nickname in high school. And I guess I inherited it through association.

In college, I wrote a song for Steven called "Grundy Love". It was a big crowd pleaser--an upbeat little pop number that used to make him smile. Cheesey words and super sunny 3-part girl harmonies. I think the cheery, shiney-happy-people words of the song described our carefree relationship, but at the same time shamelessly let him know he was the one.

Yes, I know I've been the taker.
I drank your kindess from the spout.
Yes, I know I've been the fighter
Bit through your words before they'd even left your mouth.
And yet through all my noise and nonsense,
You always smile and laugh at me
Oh, sweet lover, don't mistake me
There's not a moment of your kindness I don't see

You go and take my troubles from me
I've laid my burdens at your feet.
I rest my head upon your shoulder
You sing me love songs slow and sweet
I do believe you are an angel
You're nothing I have ever seen
Oh, sweet lover, I've converted
Your love has made a true believer out of me

And everyday, I smile and say
That you've made an honest woman out of me
And though I've roamed, I'm finally home
You are the last love that there'll ever be.

So let me take your troubles from me
Come lay your burdens at my feet.
Let me tell you that you're beautiful
I'll sing you love songs slow and sweet
'Cause every minute I am laughing
And any second I could cry
Oh, sweet lover, what you do to me!
You're finally here, and you're for real and I'm alive

And everyday, I smile and say
That you've made an honest woman out of me
And though I've roamed, I'm finally home
You are the last love that there'll ever be.
You are the only love I'm every gonna need
You are the last love that there'll ever be.

There--it's recorded for posterity. Cheesetastic McGee, I know! But I honestly still feel this way about the big lug. And I feel like the love has just expanded to my kids. Family is a strange thing. I'm so incredibly bound to them. So I guess nowadays, all 5 of us gotta whole lotta "Grundy Love."

The Old and the New

Here's a picture of us last year at 12am on January 1st.

Lots have things have changed. Most importantly, THIS guy was born.

Stevie is now in kindergarten. He's more independent and constantly making up his own little projects (yesterday, he did a "science project" to deduce which magnets were the strongest. He even made us take pictures). He's grown enormously, and talks more like a little adult than a baby. He's incredibly helpful and responsible, but still gets CUCKOO BANANAS when he's hyper. He's an amazing, amazing person.

David is the big kid at home during the day this year. He helps me take care of Jacob, plays lots of little games by himself, and is continually making outrageous claims like, "Mommy, ghosts are clear because they're made out of fog." He asks me every day if it's a school day (he goes to our co-op preschool once a week). He follows Stevie everywhere and usually drives him beserk in an attempt to get attention. He's hilarious, stubborn and absolutely precious.

Jacob is much different this year, seeing as its still his first year outside of my body. I am so, so grateful to have him. His laughs, yells, actions and newfound abilities keep us on our toes, and we're cracking up the entire time.

Steven is now a full-fledged guitar teacher. He has 2 students and will soon have 2 more. He continues to excel at work and becomes more and more invaluable to his section. He's taken a firmer hold of finances this year and has succeeded in getting us in a better, more solvent place. He continues to be my dream husband and the children's dream father. He's now the proud owner of a new electric bass. He spends at least 30 minutes every day reveling in music, as he practices his orchestra of instruments.

Me. Have I changed that much this year? I've lost 15 pounds (besides baby weight). I dyed my hair red as a part of what I can only assume was a pre-mid-life crisis. I've had the very great pleasure of bringing another life into this world, and am having an absolutely wonderful time loving and taking care of my baby. I've had some momentous spiritual struggles and "aha" moments, and I continue to do so. I've rededicated myself to my career as a stay-at-home mother, and I hope to become a little better at it as the years go by. I've taken much pleasure in reading many beautiful words and ideas this year, and I've struggled through some truisms that seemed to contradict each other. I've lost my confidence, gained it back, and then lost it again circuitously. I've developed some incredibly meaningful friendships that have been a boon to my spirits and have brought clarity to my thoughts. I've worked on stopping the incessant, worrisome chatter in my head in order to make room for God to pour in His cup of love and wisdom. Conclusively, I'm growing. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it's exciting. But its always scary, and always good for me.

If something else comes up that I'd like to write about, I'll push the topics back a day--it's really just a loose guide. But I thought this might get me back in the swing of things, so here goes...

DAY 1: 5 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

This is a tricky one, because I usually tell everyone everything about myself in the first five minutes of meeting. I'm not the most demure gal on the block. But I'll give it a whirl.

1.) I can seldom sit through a movie. It’s not that I don’t like movies—I do, I really do! I just have a small attention span, and 2 hours seems like an impossibly long time committment to me. So unless people are making hilarious wise-cracks through the entire thing, I usually wander off…

2.) I didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was 9 years old. My parents tried to teach me earlier, but every time I’d lose control, I’d leap off the bike and let it crash willy-nilly into the nearest barrier---be it animal, vegetable or mineral. My parents eventually gave up, and it was only the horrible shame of being the oldest kid on the block who didn’t ride a bike that eventually helped me overcome my fears.

3.) I first met Steven when I saw his band “Groove Stew” play at “The Wrapsody.” But I was originally attracted to the lead guitarist/singer, Matt. I didn’t even notice Steven until much later. (He can be very convincing...)

4.) I won the Nordan Fine Arts Scholarship at Texas Christian University. My ex-boyfriend, who I was still desperately in love with, had mentioned that it was an incredibly prestigious musical scholarship. He was already studying classical piano as a freshman at TCU, so I tried out for it on a whim, hoping to impress him. When I called him up to tell him I had won, he just laughed.

5.) Saturdays are my favorite days of the week. It’s the only day that I get to spend completely with my little family. We run errands, discuss what needs to be done with the house or with life in general, and usually do something fun together at night. I look forward to Saturdays all week long.

So there's my 5 facts. I'd love for you to join me in my quest to be a better record-keeper!

Stevie's First Basketball Game

Stevie started basketball this year, and it's fabulous. Here's a pic of their huddle before their first game.

So of all the sports we've tried out for the boys, Basketball has definitely been MY favorite. Sure, you have the novelty of tiny people with bats and helmets in T-ball; you've got the mob-like mentality of soccer. But in basketball, they actually keep SCORE! And there's constant (and sometimes hilarious)action.

And to top things off, Stevie LOVES IT! You should see this kid in practice. Even when Coach Andy huddles them up for instruction time, Stevie is literally running in place---itching to get out on the court. It's one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

So now we obviously need a basketball hoop over our garage so Stevie can get out there and practice (and maybe teach his younger brothers a thing or two). And all I can say is it's a good thing we found a place to instruct our boys in sports---otherwise they might never have learned and ended up as athletically challenged as their good- intentioned but comically inept mother.

(Their group huddle at the end of the game. GO ROCKETS!)

New Year's Eve

I was all set to throw a New Year's Eve party this year when our friend the Greenfields did a wonderful thing. They reserved the church so that everyone could come and no one would be left with a destroyed house. Which was so wonderful because truth be told, throwing parties is insanely stressful to me. I always end up obsessing over whether or not people are having a good time, and therefore pretty much forget to enjoy myself. So theirs was a perfect solution. And it turned out to be MUCH fun.

We just brought some food and some games up to the church and played and talked and ate. At midnight, we all rushed outside to scream "Happy New Year" to the night sky.

2010 was so good to us. Mostly because we got Jake, whose addition to the family has been pure joy and seems to bring out the best in all of us. But also it's just been a great year. Here's hoping the next one is equally as kind.

Family Pictures

I just realized I never blogged out family portraits! Our friend, Ben Cobb (see his photogrpahy blog HERE), was nice enough to take pictures for us free of charge in order to hone his photography skills (which were already well-honed). Being Grundbergs, we jumped at the chance to mooch off his talent! Here are the fruits of said jump:

A picture of Stevie with his buddy Bodin.

I just bought a bunch of picture frames so that I can hang these beauties in our family room. I cannot express how much I LOVE these pictures! I can't wait!

Jake Update

Wow, I am behind. I took Jakie in for his 9 month appointment on Dec. 28th. I asked about his perpetual cough which never seems to go away. He never acts sick or exhausted, just continually congested. His doctor told me at his age, it's really just a sign of life. He said their little nasal passages are so tiny that the slightest thing can cause congestion, and that I shouldn't worry as it was completely normal.

Jacob's official stats are:

WEIGHT: 19 lbs 11 oz 25-50%
HEIGHT: 30 1/2 inches 95 %
HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE: 46 cm 50-75%

So basically this kiddo is just tall and lanky. I guess the height runs in the family--not sure about the lankiness. He's all up to date on his vaccines too.

In other news, he's finally started to pull himself up things! I was doing the dishes the other day (Jan 3rd) and felt something tugging at my leg. I looked down and saw Jake standing up, clinging to my leg with the most self-satisfied grin on face. It made it a little hard to do dishes, but his little smug laughter was well worth it. He recreated the little scene a bit later when Steven got home from work. Cute little stink.

Stressed

I'm stressed. It's always something. And I just can't seem to climb on top of it all. A few good things....exciting things. Like I was asked to direct a stake women's choir for stake conference. But I'm terrified of doing it. I don't know why, exactly. I guess it might be because I know the people in my ward love me and therefore forgive all my conducting faux pas. Will the stake folks be forgiving?

I've started teaching voice lessons. First time in a long time. Stress. How could I have forgotten so much since college? I should have video recorded my pedagogy classes. And I've lost all my repetoire books--so I'm not sure where to begin. It's so hard to instruct someone to move parts that aren't visible. You can't really say, "just move your larynx up and widen your nasal cavity..." Well I guess you can. But it's not terribly effective.

Little things keep popping up. Music activity with the Activity Day Girls at church. Primary meetings. Same old same old. But it feels like a lot right now for some reason. I just can't seem to get rid of this knot-like feeling in my chest.

To complicate matters, David seems to be incredibly needy lately. He wants one-on-one face time ALL the time, and nothing else will do. And if he doesn't get it, he immediately begins to act out negatively. I think he's feeling caught between Stevie going back to school and Jake requiring more and more of my attention. I'm trying to make an effort to be more understanding and give him what he needs. But that usually means dropping whatever I'm doing, and so things get left undone. But that's okay, right? Floors can be dirty, and toast is fine for lunch.
